Experts have revealed that a common item in the bathroom can release harmful substances, posing a risk to the family's health.
Health experts have highlighted the dangers of shower curtains, including 4 serious health issues.
They explained that shower curtains made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in particular should be avoided, which is a type of plastic that contains various additives to improve its flexibility and durability.
Experts said that these curtains may release volatile organic compounds and other “harmful” chemicals into the air when exposed to heat and humidity.
These chemicals include: phthalates and dioxins.
The following are potential health problems resulting from exposure to these chemicals:
Respiratory problems
VOCs can cause respiratory irritation, leading to conditions like asthma and bronchitis, experts said.
Skin irritation
Direct contact with plastic shower curtains can cause allergic reactions and dermatitis.
Hormonal imbalances
Experts have explained that phthalates can disrupt the endocrine system, which may lead to fertility and growth problems in children.
Cancer-causing risks
“Long-term exposure to dioxins has been linked to an increased risk of cancer,” the experts added.
Therefore, it is advisable to use curtains made of materials such as PEVA or EVA, which are free of harmful chemicals.
