A volcano in Antarctica spews gold!

The summit of one of the most active volcanoes in the world spews 80 grams of gold dust per day, worth an estimated $6,000, according to scientists.

Mount Erebus, the southernmost active volcano on Earth located in Antarctica, releases small pieces of crystallized gold among gas, steam, and rocks.

This gas was also discovered in the air 621 miles from Erebus, which explains the strength of its eruption and why it is considered one of the most active volcanoes on the planet.

With its peak reaching a height of about 3,794 metres, Erebus is the tallest volcano in Antarctica, which includes an estimated 138 volcanoes.

Erebus is located on Ross Island in the Ross Sea (a deep bay located in the waters of the Antarctic Ocean bordering Antarctica), and was named after Captain James Clark Ross, who first discovered Erebus, in a state of eruption, in 1841.

Erebus Volcano, which looms across from McMurdo Research Base on Scott Island, has been erupting continuously since at least 1972, Conor Bacon, a research scientist at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, told Live Science.

NASA's Earth Observatory also explains how the volcano sits on top of a thin piece of Earth's crust, which means molten rock rises more easily.

This may help explain why specks of gold dust are found at a great distance from where they are located.
