Russian physician Andrei Kondrakhin described the possible consequences of swimming in the Seine to French officials.
According to Kondrakhin's statements, which were reported by the "360" website, the development of microorganisms in the water accelerates in the summer.
“Warm water contains more mold products, so the risk of people getting infected with microorganisms is greater,” the Russian doctor explained.
Kondrakhin added that the consequences of being in dirty water can be very serious, even fatal.
"A non-athletic person has difficulty getting intestinal infections, especially with heavy physical activity and on an empty stomach," the doctor said.
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo fulfilled a promise she made in January to swim in the Seine on Wednesday, nine days before the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympics, in an attempt to prove the river is safe for competitions.
She was joined in the swim by Tony Estang, the head of the Olympic Organizing Committee, and a few days before that, French Sports Minister Amelie Oudea-Castera swam in the Seine.
