An American prisoner who earns 13 cents an hour for his prison work donated his monthly wage of $17.74 to the Gaza Strip.
The Washington Post said that people began donating to prisoner Hamza, 56 years old, who works as a cleaner in a prison health care facility in northern California, hours after his friend published a receipt for his payment for 136 hours of work in the prison for Gaza on social networking sites.
Hamza's friend said that the latter was "worried and devastated" about the news he was following about Gaza in prison, which prompted him to take his step.
Hamza is also expected to donate his salary for the month of March to civilians in Gaza, an amount he hopes will be his last salary from prison.
The value of the donations that people collected for Hamza amounted to more than 100 thousand dollars, before Al-Sameen asked his friend to stop donating, as he told him that what he collected was enough for him and he did not want to “distract people’s attention from those who are suffering more than him.”
Hamza has been in prison for nearly 40 years, and will be released this month. He converted to Islam in 1989.
