A strong overnight earthquake struck Gansu and Qinghai provinces in northwestern China, reducing homes to rubble and leaving residents outside in freezing temperatures. The magnitude 6.2 earthquake killed 131 people, injured over 700, and caused extensive damage to roads, power lines, and communication networks. Search and rescue operations are underway to find the missing in collapsed buildings and a landslide. The earthquake was felt in the surrounding areas, including the provincial capital of Lanzhou. Tents, beds, and quilts are being sent to the affected areas to assist the survivors in the below-freezing temperatures.
