The ASI Alliance, a consortium of three blockchain-based AI projects, strongly recommends using decentralized cloud infrastructure to develop Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). The group argues that decentralized systems are crucial for ensuring the future viability of AGI technologies.
Critique of centralized cloud services
In a recent publication on X, the ASI Alliance articulated concerns about the limitations of centralized cloud services like Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, and Google Cloud for AGI development. They pointed out vulnerabilities in these systems that make them unsuitable for the nuanced demands of AGI, which aspires to achieve human-like cognitive abilities. According to the Alliance, centralized platforms pose significant risks, including data monopolization and cyber-attack susceptibility.
The case for decentralization
The Alliance advocates decentralization because it believes it will democratize technology and data governance access. A decentralized cloud would prevent any entity from controlling the AGI infrastructure and distributing data and governance across multiple nodes.
This framework ensures that each node holds only a portion of the data, promoting a more democratic and secure approach to AI development. “Adopting a decentralized cloud model for AGI development not only enhances security but also fosters a more equitable distribution of power within the digital landscape,” the Alliance noted in their discussion.
Industry support for decentralized AI
The push for decentralized AI infrastructure is not isolated to the ASI Alliance. Figures like Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin have also highlighted the perils of centralized AI systems. Buterin, in particular, has called for what he terms ‘decentralized effective accelerationism’ to mitigate risks associated with AI advancements controlled by a limited number of people.
Several AI projects are pivoting towards blockchain technology to leverage its inherent benefits of decentralization. These include Morpheus, an open-source AI agent network, Nesa blockchain, Render Network, and the Internet Computer Protocol. While still in the nascent stages, these initiatives signify a broader industry trend towards decentralized AI, a movement that proponents believe is inevitable for the next evolution of AI technology.
Dominic Williams, founder of the DFinity Foundation, and Calanthia Mei, co-founder of Masa Network, back decentralized AI. They argue that such a framework addresses issues like algorithmic bias and opens up new possibilities for innovation and competition in the AI field.
