ANKARA - Bahrain on Friday expressed its support for holding an emergency Arab summit to discuss the fate of the Palestinian people following US President Donald Trump's controversial proposal to take over the Gaza Strip and relocate its citizens.
Bahrain News Agency quoted Foreign Minister Abdullatif Al Zayani as saying Bahrain supports the Cairo summit, and stressed the importance of "continuing political consultations among Arab countries regarding the latest developments in the region."
He added that the kingdom's stance came within the framework of its leadership at the 33rd Arab Summit.
Al Zayani reiterated that the Arab states' stance "towards the Palestinian cause will remain firm and united."
“Comprehensive peace in the Middle East depends on protecting the rights of the Palestinian people, preventing their displacement from their land, and establishing an independent state,” he said.
"A Palestinian state with full sovereignty can coexist peacefully with Israel in line with international resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative," he was quoted as saying by BNA.
Support for the summit comes amid intensive efforts by Arab states to strike a common stance on Trump's proposal, led by Egypt.
On Tuesday, Trump caused a stir by proposing the US take over the Gaza Strip and relocate its citizens elsewhere during a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Since January 25, Trump has repeatedly proposed that Palestinians in the Gaza Strip be resettled in Arab countries such as Egypt and Jordan, an idea rejected by Arab countries and Palestinian leaders and even the entire world.
