Nearly 1,000 seals and sea lions have died from bird flu outbreaks in southern Brazil. Authorities are working to isolate the deadly virus from commercial poultry flocks. The outbreak has resulted in an unprecedented 942 sea mammal deaths in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The virus attacks the nervous system of sea mammals, causing convulsions. The contagion among sea mammals is believed to have started in Peru and spread to Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, and now Brazil.
