The unmanned Brit had been walking with his dog on the shoreline at Los Enebrales beach in Punta Umbria in the southwest Spain close to the border with Portugal.

The alarm was raised yesterday afternoon by witnesses who tried to help him before police and health professionals arrived.

Emergency responders spent more than half an hour trying to save him to no avail.

The dead man is understood to have been identified by his dog’s microchip, as he wasn’t carrying any ID.

A post-mortem is expected to take place later today or tomorrow to try to establish the cause of death.

Los Enebrales beach is often listed as one of the best nudist beaches in southern Spain, although lots of the locals and holidaymakers who use it are said to keep their clothes on.

Its fine sand is bordered with juniper and pine woods.

Officials have so far given no indication of what they think could have led to the British man collapsing.
