Spanish police have yet to make any official comment.

Respected local paper Malaga Hoy said the arrested man was leading a “normal life” in the town.

He is now facing extradition to Britain.

It was not immediately clear this morning if he had already appeared before a judge as part of the return process and whether he has consented to being flown back to the UK or is opposing extradition.

The unnamed man is said to be wanted over sexual assaults on two alleged victims who were aged just 10 and 13 at the time.

Glenn Wathall, sentenced to life imprisonment in 1999 for beating his partner to death in a Christmas Day attack, had gone AWOL following his February 2015 breach of bail conditions after his release from jail on parole.
