A BRITISH tourist has died after being run over by a bus on the holiday island of Lanzarote as cops investigate whether the driver was speeding.
The unnamed woman was rushed to hospital in critical condition after being hit by the vehicle in the popular resort of Costa Teguise.
The Brit woman was taken to Jose Molina Orosa Hospital in Lanzarote[/caption]Cops have confirmed she was an 83-year-old British national, but she is yet to be named.
Officials said today she died at Jose Molina Orosa Hospital in the island capital Arrecife.
The tragic accident happened just after 9am on Wednesday and she is thought to have died later that day.
Local reports said witnesses told investigators the driver of the bus, owned by a private firm but providing a public transportation service, had been travelling “too fast”.
But there has been no official confirmation of this claim yet.
A local official said: “A woman run over by a bus in Lanzarote has been taken to Doctor Jose Molina Orosa Hospital with serious multiple injuries.
“The first alert was received at 9.08am on Wednesday, saying a traffic accident had occurred in the municipality of Teguise and a person had been injured.”
It was not clear this morning whether the tourist was on her own or accompanied by family or friends when she was hit.
Local cops have launched an investigation and will question the bus driver as part of the probe.
His vehicle is also expected to be examined to rule out any possible mechanical faults.
