One of the buses, said to be carrying tourists, smashed into the back of the other and made it crash into a tree, local media reports.

The accident happened early this afternoon in the Avinguida Diagonal – one of the Catalan capital’s broadest and most important avenues, near to the famous Sagrada Familia monument.

Pictures from the scene show dozens of emergency responders surrounding the two buses.

Around 20 ambulances are said to have been mobilised and rushed to the scene and rescue those trapped on the vehicles.

The street where the buses made contact was temporarily closed off as emergency teams dealt with the crash.

A spokesman for a regional government-run emergency response coordination centre said: “Some 34 people have needed medical attention following an accident between two buses on Avinguida Diagonal.

“Four of them are in a critical condition.”

Three were instantly rushed to hospital at separate hospitals in Barcelona.

The fourth person was unable to escape one of the heavily damaged buses and needed to be cut out by specialist rescue teams, the spokesman added.
