  • Charles Hoskinson, the CEO of Input Output Global and founder of Cardano, has responded to Andrej Karpathy’s post on X, highlighting the potential dangers of AI-driven coding.
  • Andrej Karpathy introduced the concept of vibe coding, a new approach where developers fully embrace AI-driven programming, relying entirely on large language models.

Charles Hoskinson, the founder of Cardano, has been vocal about the growing implications of artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential impact on various industries. Last year, he warned about AI censorship, calling its consequences “profound” and an ongoing concern. He argued that AI systems are losing their utility over time due to alignment training, which shapes AI behavior to meet predefined ethical or corporate guidelines.

In his latest critique, Charles Hoskinson responded to an X post by Andrej Karpathy, co-founder of OpenAI, who introduced a new approach to coding that relies almost entirely on AI assistance. Karpathy referred to this method as “vibe coding,” where developers depend on large language models (LLMs) like Cursor Composer with minimal manual intervention. He explained how he simply gives verbal instructions, accepts AI-generated suggestions without review, and lets AI handle error messages, rarely examining the actual code himself.

Karpathy further elaborated on this approach, stating,

Sometimes the LLMs can’t fix a bug, so I just work around it or ask for random changes until it goes away. It’s not too bad for throwaway weekend projects, but still quite amusing. I’m building a project or web app, but it’s not really coding, I just see stuff, say stuff, run stuff, and copy-paste stuff, and it mostly works.

Industry Experts Echo Concerns

In response, Hoskinson posted a GIF of the infamous melting face scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark, suggesting that such a shift in software development could have disastrous consequences in the long run. Hoskinson isn’t alone in his concerns. Casey Muratori, a well-known programmer, echoed similar warnings, stating: “If you thought software was bad today, buckle up because it’s about to get a whole lot worse.”

This sentiment reflects broader skepticism about the increasing dependence on AI-generated code and the potential decline in software quality and human oversight. Critics argue that while AI can streamline development, it also risks creating opaque, unmanageable, and poorly optimized systems that may introduce hidden vulnerabilities.

On a more positive note, Hoskinson shared his vision for Cardano’s future in a recent AMA session. He discussed potential partnerships with the Internet Computer Protocol (ICP) and the development of a stablecoin strategy. Hoskinson also shared plans to combine Hydra, Cardano’s layer-2 scalability solution, with the Lightning Network, which could result in a “lightning-Hydra synergy” that enhances cross-chain capabilities.

In other news, Cardano’s price has taken a hit, with ADA valued at $0.7126 at the time of writing, reflecting a 17.30% drop over the past 24 hours and a 21.48% dip over the past week. However, this is not an isolated incident, as the broader crypto market has been affected by a slump triggered by a Trump-initiated trade war over tariffs. Despite this setback, Hoskinson is optimistic about the month of February, with several promising developments on the horizon.
