It was located in an electrical bay but then retreated into the wiring, meaning the Boeing 737 could not leave the airport in Rome.

Cargo panels were removed by engineers to no avail so a door was left open, and the cat was eventually filmed cautiously padding down the steps.

A source said: “The cat was a stowaway but could have caused major problems at 30,000ft.

“It’s a blessing the miaows were heard. It was an expensive issue for Ryanair and will have set them back tens of thousands of pounds.”

An official report into the chaos last week said: “During pre-flight check a cat’s sound was heard.

“Identified cat inside forward electrical and equipment bay. While trying to catch it, the cat moved to the back of main electrical and equipment bay through air-stair compartment.

“Removed forward cargo compartment forward panels to better access . . . cat moved forward again . . . cat still on board.”

Records show the plane was grounded for two days before flying to Germany last Monday.
