CDK Global Pays $25 Million in Bitcoin Post Ransomware Attack

  • Around 387 BTC was received on June 21 by an address associated with BlackSuit.
  • Computer systems or data may be encrypted and held hostage by ransomware.

An assault on CDK Global’s software interrupted operations last month, impacting some 15,000 car dealerships in the United States. Around 387 Bitcoin worth around $25M was received on June 21 by an address associated with BlackSuit, according to ZachXBT. After then, the funds went to a number of centralized exchanges. A prominent ransomware organization targeting US firms, BlackSuit debuted in 2023.

This payment is in line with what was previously reported by Bloomberg, which said that CDK Global intended to pay a ransom in order to stop the public disclosure of its data. In order to get its systems back up, the corporation had already committed to spend millions.

But CDK still hasn’t said if they paid the ransom or not. Rather, last week it said that nearly every one of its 15,000 clients who were car dealerships were online again.

Increasing Ransomware Demads in Crypto

Computer systems or data may be encrypted and held hostage by ransomware, which encrypts the files and then demands payment in order to unlock them. Payments from crypto-related ransomware attacks almost doubled to over $1 billion in 2023, according to blockchain monitoring company Chainalysis.

One extortion organization, “cl0p,” received roughly $100 million in ransom payments during the year, according to the analytics firm. Malicious actors compromised the MOVEit file-sharing program.

Black Basta allegedly demanded $107 million in Bitcoin as ransom. Many of these ransom payments ended up to Garantex, a Russian cryptocurrency exchange that is subject to sanctions. Specifically, in February, a Bitcoin ransomware assault demanded 3.5 BTC from Romanian hospitals. Because of these high-profile incidents, government authorities such as the FBI have issued many cautions about these malevolent actors.
