It was in a full room that supporters of the former ruling party in Chad, the Patriotic Salvation Movement MPS, 200 other political parties as well as thousands of associations gathered for the inauguration of the current President of the Chadian transition Mahamat Kaka Deby.
It is no surprise that this so-called coalition for a united Chad has made the current leader of the transition its torchbearer. The candidate says he agreed to run after careful consideration: “After calm and deep reflection, I decided to follow up on the choice you made of our modest person as candidate of the coalition for a united Chad. Me, Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, I am a candidate for the 2024 presidential election under the banner of the coalition for a united Chad,” declared Mahamat Deby Itno, head of the Chadian transition and presidential candidate.
This event comes only a few days after the violent incidents which shook Ndjamena the capital, notably the attack on the party headquarters of the opponent Yaya Dillo killed during the assault.
The now candidate Mahamat Deby confided that until his nomination as a candidate, his only interest was always to reconcile Chad: “I admit to you that I did not see myself as a candidate because my main concern was to bring this transition to fruition in peace and stability in a united and reconciled Chad, a Chad where there is no threat to its territorial integrity, a Chad free of any war between its sons and a whole Chad.
As a reminder, the date of the elections is set for May 6 while the social political context has remained tense for several days. The internet is back after 48 hours of intense outages, and during this time the city remained under high surveillance , with the army and government warning that they would put out of harm anyone who undermined the security of the state.
