China says mediated 'immediate ceasefire' between Myanmar army and armed alliance

On Friday, China announced the successful negotiation of an "immediate ceasefire" between Myanmar's military and a coalition of ethnic minority armed groups. The conflict, which has been ongoing in the northern Shan state since October, saw resolution through talks facilitated by the Chinese side on Wednesday and Thursday in Kunming, Yunnan Province, bordering Myanmar. Since November, residents have been fleeing Laukkai town, situated in a district along the Chinese border. The town, governed by a militia aligned with the Myanmar military, has gained notoriety for activities such as gambling, prostitution, and hosting online scams.
