But one expectant couple took it too far and decided to unveil their baby’s sex by turning a stunning natural waterfall a different colour.
The pair then boasted their stunt on social media before quickly deleting the footage when they received massive backlash.
In the footage, the cascading white waters can be seen transforming into blue as the couple excitedly hugs and the people around them cheer on.
The stunt apparently involved pouring a powdered chemical known as “Blue Lagoon” into the Queima-Pe River, which feeds the waterfall.
The picturesque waterfall is located on the premises of a privately-owned property – three miles away from Tangara da Serra.
The 59ft high waterfall is often rented for third-party events and has been a popular destination for ecological tourism.
The future parents hired the site for their celebration but failed to notify the owner of their plans.
After the videos circulated on the social media, the public demanded for the couple to be punished, with some suggesting they should go to jail.
Others were concerned about a possible water contamination for people further down the stream.
In response, the Public Ministry of Mato Grosso (MPMT) has taken a legal action against the responsible party.
They have reportedly ordered the couple to pay a hefty £30,000 fine as compensation for the environmental damage.
The pair will also have to pledge never to repeat such a stunt or they will face further penalties.
Environmental engineer Vanessa Costa said: “Congratulations… You will be the parents of a beautiful environmental crime.”
The Queima-Pe River, after which the waterfall is named, is the main source that supplies the municipality of Tangara da Serra.
The city has recently experienced a water supply crisis triggered by prolonged periods of no rain.
Another gender reveal party ended in tragedy after a plane nosedived and crashed in front of screaming guests.
The video, filmed by a party guest, begins as a light aircraft drafted in to perform the incredible reveal comes into view.
As the small plane approaches, it releases pink smoke to signify the couple, from San Pedro, Mexico, are having a girl.
But tragedy strikes as the pilot appears to pull the Piper PA-25-235 Pawnee aircraft upwards and the left wing suddenly gives way, sending the aircraft into a fatal tailspin.
