New treatment for Parkinson's disease may accelerate the destruction of brain tissue

Scientists at the Institute of Cytology of the Russian Academy of Sciences have discovered that a promising method for treating Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases may lead to the destruction of brain tissue.

Anna Sulatskaya, chief researcher at the Laboratory of Structural Dynamics, Stability and Folding of Proteins at the Institute of the Scientific Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, indicated in an interview with the Russian TASS news agency that the method of destroying dangerous amyloid plaques with drugs in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and other neurodegenerative diseases, could lead to To accelerate the development of these diseases, rather than treat them.

As is known, amyloid plaques, which are formed from fibers of the same name, lead to the degeneration of tissues within the human brain and nervous system - leading to the development of Huntington's, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. The currently common method of treating these diseases in the world is the use of drugs that destroy amyloid plaques.

But it became clear to scientists of the Institute of Cytology, after analyzing data collected at the institute and outside it, that the fission products of amyloid plaques and their various “fragments” can accelerate the process of destruction of brain tissue. According to them, this explains the mysterious results of testing new medical drugs.

“It turns out that in most cases, amyloid fibers are not completely destroyed, and the products of amyloid degradation are often more toxic to cells and tissues than the original aggregates, which accelerates the process of forming new pathological fibers that contribute to the rapid spread of amyloid between cells,” Sulatskaya says.

Experts at the Institute of Cytology confirm that in order to prevent these negative consequences of treatment with these drugs, large-scale experiments must be conducted in the laboratory, to determine the mechanism of destruction of plaques under the influence of drugs, and to study the toxicity of the degradation products and the speed of their spread throughout the body in order to improve treatment methods based on their results. . Because according to them, this matter does not receive the required attention.
