Secretary of State Marco Rubio "split" with President Donald Trump over the ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, The Daily Beast reported Friday.

Speaking to the press, Rubio lamented the lack of progress in negotiations and said that the United States could “move on” from the talks in “a matter of days" if no agreement can be reached.

Rubio said during a meeting in Paris, “When you start negotiating these things through the media, they fall apart."

"Although Rubio didn’t explain what he meant, America’s attempts to broker a deal between Russia and Ukraine have stumbled after Trump and Vance’s televised Oval Office tirade against Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky on February 28. The impetus in the negotiations has never recovered," said the Beast in its report.

Zelensky met with Rubio personally and agreed to several conditions that the team presented to the Russians. However, the Russian government said it couldn't agree to the plan "in its current form."

Trump said from the White House on Friday afternoon, he remains “hopeful of getting it done.”

“If for some reason one of the two parties makes it very difficult, we’re just going to say you’re foolish, you’re fools, you’re horrible people, and we’re just going to take a pass. But hopefully we won’t have to do that," Trump added.

While visiting Rome, Vice President JD Vance said he remains "optimistic," The New York Times cited.

“I won’t prejudge them, but we do feel optimistic that we can hopefully bring this war, this very brutal war, to a close,” he said.

Before he was sworn into office, Trump promised he would end the war within “24 hours," the Times reported at the time.

The Daily Beast speculated that the division of opinions could lead to Rubio being "the first victim of a Cabinet reshuffle."

Ukraine was working with European officials over an agreement, but those "broke off" on Friday, the Beast reported. They intend to meet in London next week.

"Rubio hinted that it may be the last chance saloon for a negotiated peace," the Beast said.
