The women were reportedly part of a group of pro-Palestine protesters who joined the march in Berlin

Police in Berlin violently clashed with female activists at a pro-Palestine demonstration that took place during an International Women’s Day march on Saturday, according to videos posted online.

Footage circulating on X shows officers in riot gear using batons, as well as their fists, as they attempted to disperse the crowd. In one video, a group of officers is seen dragging a female protester before pinning her to the ground and choking her.

The footage has gone viral, sparking outrage. Some users condemned the officers’ actions, likening them to WW2-era Nazi practices, while others sarcastically praised the German authorities for demonstrating how women’s rights are enforced in the West.

German media has largely remained silent on the incident. However, Bild reported on Sunday that a pro-Palestine rally had been planned as part of the Women’s Day march in Berlin’s Kreuzberg district. According to the report, the organizers advised participants not to bring national flags, including those of Israel and Germany, but permitted Palestinian flags to symbolize a “revolutionary stance.”

The demonstration, which took place at Oranienplatz, reportedly remained peaceful until some began chanting anti-Israel slogans in Arabic, which is banned in Berlin.

Police intervened when the protesters allegedly violated the restriction, triggering a confrontation, Bild reported. As tensions escalated, demonstrators reportedly threw bottles and clashed with officers, leaving at least one officer injured. Berlin police confirmed the incident on their official X account, stating that 28 people were detained and insisting that the officers had no choice but to use force against protesters who they claim were acting violently.

Last month, the authorities in Berlin imposed restrictions on Arabic-language chants and speeches at demonstrations, citing “public security” concerns. Local media reported that protest organizers must now ensure all speeches, music, and chants are conducted in German or English. The city’s authorities, however, have so far stopped short of banning pro-Palestinian and anti-Israeli rallies outright, with the Berlin chief of police, Barbara Slowik, insisting that freedom of assembly is a cornerstone of Germany’s democracy.
