How many minutes should you walk to boost your brain power?

Neuroscience studies have shown that just 20 minutes of walking can enhance the brain's ability to absorb and retain new information.

Scientists explained that these positive effects can be seen in areas of the brain involved in decision-making, stress management, and behavior planning.

In this regard, Tim Cardin, user

In the study, participants walked for 20 minutes on a treadmill before taking a reading test, and performed significantly better than people who sat quietly for 20 minutes.

Electroencephalography (EEG) measurements showed that participants' brain activity rose significantly during walking, and some of the biggest brain-boosting effects lasted for about 30 minutes after they finished exercising.

“Throughout history, the greatest thinkers have been enthusiastic wanderers,” Cardin said. “Technology entrepreneurs, including Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg, have been known to support walking meetings. Walking dissolves mental blocks, promotes divergent thinking, and connects ideas.”

In a study conducted by scientists at Stanford University, volunteers performed better on a test of creative thinking while walking.

Walking can have benefits related to how we get along with others too.

A study published in 2023 found that brisk walking for just 11 minutes a day could reduce the chances of premature death by nearly a quarter.

Cardin also said that “walking after eating is great,” which is in line with the results of a 2022 study, conducted by researchers at the University of Limerick in Ireland.

The research team said that walking a short distance after eating can reduce blood sugar and reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
