Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI) of DKI Jakarta stated that toddlers living in urban areas can experience Acute Respiratory Tract Infections (ARI) seven to nine times a year or more than toddlers living in rural areas."A toddler can experience seven to nine episodes of ARI per year. And this will be more frequent in urban areas than in rural areas. Why? Maybe it is related to pollution and population density," said IDAI DKI Jakarta representative dr. Madeleine Ramdhani Jasin, Sp.A (K) in an online discussion "Recognize ARI and Pneumonia for Us to Prevent and Treat" held by the DKI Jakarta Health Office in Jakarta, Monday.ARI is caused by one of 23 microorganisms, one of which is Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) which enters the respiratory tract. Symptoms experienced by patients include coughing and runny nose, can be accompanied by persistent fever, sore throat, difficulty breathing, headache, and weakness or fatigue.ARI patients, she said, usually recover in less than seven days or 14 days with proper treatment. The therapies that can be given are providing sufficient fluids and nutrition, medication according to symptoms, then giving antibiotics or antivirals if needed. However, there is a condition that is feared from ISPA, namely if the infection develops pneumonia or lung inflammation. Pneumonia can cause patients to have shortness of breath, even requiring further treatment in the hospital.
