The BJP-ruled state of Gujarat has reported more than 25,000 suicides in three years, with the capital Ahmedabad recording the highest number of suicides.
The government told the Assembly yesterday that more than 25,000 people have committed suicide in the state during the last three financial years due to various reasons. The report also revealed that around 500 students are among those who committed suicide.
According to the data shared by the Gujarat government in the House, 25,478 people have committed suicide in different parts of Gujarat in the last three years. Among those who committed suicide are 495 students.
In response to Congress leader Imran Khedawala's question, Chief Minister Bhupinder Patel has said in a written reply that 8,307 people committed suicide in the financial year 2020-21, 8,614 in the financial year 2021-22 and 8,557 in the financial year 2022-23. Has committed suicide.
Figures provided by the Gujarat government show that the highest number of suicides, 3,280, were recorded in Ahmedabad city, followed by Surat city with 2,862 and Rajkot city with 1,287.
Many reasons have been given for these suicides. Reasons cited by the government for suicide include mental health, love relationship, serious illness, family problems, financial crisis and fear of failing exams.
The Gujarat Chief Minister said that to prevent people from committing suicide, the state government provides counseling through helpline numbers '181 Abhiham' and '1096 Zindagi'.
According to the data shared by the Chief Minister, 495 of those who committed suicide were students. The Chief Minister said that several measures are being taken to prevent students from taking their own lives. He said that awareness seminars are being organized in educational institutions.
