The Iraqi government, led by prime minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, is initiating the removal of the US-led international military coalition from the country. There are currently 900 US troops in Syria and 2,500 in Iraq on a mission to advise and assist local forces in preventing a resurgence of Islamic State. The move comes in response to a US strike that killed a militia leader in Baghdad, which angered Iran-aligned groups demanding the end of the coalition's presence in Iraq. A bilateral committee, including military coalition representatives, will be established to permanently end the coalition's presence.
