Heavy rains and torrential floods cause huge material losses in the city of Kufra

The city of Kufra in southeastern Libya witnessed unprecedented heavy rains, which led to torrential floods that submerged large parts of the city, causing significant material losses to citizens’ property.

Kufra Municipality spokesman Abdullah Suleiman told RT that the Martyr Attia Al-Kassah Hospital, which is the main medical facility in the city, suffered severe damage after large amounts of rainwater entered the ground floor.

Suleiman added that the hospital was completely out of service as a result of this damage, which necessitated the urgent intervention of ambulance teams to evacuate the patients.

Suleiman pointed out that 10 patients were evacuated from the hospital and distributed to a number of clinics and other health centers in the city to receive the necessary care.

The spokesman for the Kufra municipality confirmed that the heavy rains and strong winds that hit the city not only caused the closure of the hospital but also caused significant material damage to homes, cars and infrastructure.

Local residents appealed to the authorities to provide immediate assistance and work to repair the damage, especially with the lack of medical capabilities after the hospital was put out of service.

Citizens circulated videos on social media showing the extent of the disaster, as the videos showed the huge amounts of water that flooded the streets and homes, turning the city into a square of mud and water.
