Melania Trump and Charles first met in New York in 2005 when King Charles was the Prince of Wales. They reunited in 2019 when Melania made a state visit to the UK with Donald Trump who was the president at that time. Melania wrote that it was an "absolute pleasure to reconnect" with Charles. Donald Trump received a private letter from the monarch after the first assassination attempt was made in July in Pennsylvania, during an election rally.
