According to reports the British national was found stabbed after tussling with an intruder who rang the doorbell at the property, near Munich, Germany.

At a press conference Friday police confirmed they had found a knife linked to the investigation in nearby forest after it was searched by 120 officers.

Detectives also said they had found a backpack linked to the investigation thrown into Lake Ammersee – weighed down with stones.

Officers revealed it contained items from German supermarket chain Edeka – where CCTV showing a wanted man in the toiletries aisle were taken before the attack.

Earlier Bavarian cops said they had arrested a 22-year-old Serbian  man in Paris after a six-day manhunt.

French special forces raided an apartment in the north of the French capital where the suspect was found alone 500 from the attack scene, in Herrsching am Ammersee.

The suspect was expected to be put before an investigating judge in Paris Friday, which is standard for arrested suspect’s in France.

Sources have suggested the hit on British national Mr Cameron may have been linked to a string of high value vintage cars he kept at his £2m home.

A member of the public tipped cops off after seeing pictures of a tall, blonde man in the toiletries aisle of a local supermarket before the doorstep stabbing.

Cops have established he fled Munich to Zurich, in Switzerland, then travelled directly to Paris.

Fürstenfeldbruck police chief Manfred Frei also praised the large number of people who participated in solving the crime.

He said: “The valuable information provided after the public manhunt meant that we were able to quickly identify the suspect.

“This was a cornerstone for the man’s rapid arrest abroad.”

British-born Mr Cameron is said to have been knocked to the ground as he answered a ring at his door – before later being found stabbed to death, last Friday night.

His wife ran to a neighbour’s property where she called police, near Munich.

Neighbours reported previously seeing the suspect around the property, raising the spectre it had been a planned break-in at the property where Mr Cameron kept luxury cars.

The power cable for surveillance cameras was also said to have been found cut.

Mr Cameron, who worked for Rolls from 1999 to 2012, kept a number of high-value vehicles at his property in Herrsching am Ammersee, 50 miles west of Munich.

A spokesman for police in Bavaria said: “Ultimately, his whereabouts were located in an apartment northeast of Paris, where the man was arrested by French special forces on Thursday.

“The Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) coordinated the cooperation with the French police authorities.

“The suspect was alone in the apartment at the time and offered no resistance. He will be brought before a French investigating judge on Friday.

“It is thanks to the close cooperation of all the investigative authorities involved that the fugitive suspect was quickly identified and arrested.”
