Mongolia: 6 million livestock died

The number of dead livestock in Mongolia due to the difficult spring-winter climate conditions experienced by pasture animals in the country has risen to about 6 million heads, according to a statement by the State Emergency Committee.

The committee said in a press conference: “As of March 20, 5,922,957 heads of domestic pasture animals have died in our country due to the difficult winter and spring conditions.”

The committee indicated that 380 families lost their livestock herds completely, and pointed out that the information available to it indicates that until the end of this March, 50% of Mongolia’s land areas will remain covered in snow.

Its thickness (snow) reaches 23-28 centimeters in the western Emak area of ​​Oves County.

Meteorologists issued a storm warning, as heavy snow and dust storms with wind speeds ranging from 16 to 34 meters per second are expected to occur in most parts of the country on March 26 and 27.

About the problem

Mongolia is one of the few countries that has preserved seasonal (nomadic) pastoralism since ancient times. It is considered one of the main sectors of the country's economy, along with mineral extraction and export.

One in four Mongolians also work as an official in nomadic pastoralism, which depends 95% on natural pastures and weather conditions.
