Myitkyina Airport is closed indefinitely due to fighting

Myitkyina Airport has been closed indefinitely starting today, March 9, according to local residents and flight ticket agents, due to the intense fighting in Kachin State and the lack of security at the airport.

An airline ticket sales representative in Myitkyina, who did not want to be named, told RFA that the airport was closed because security staff could no longer provide security.

"Those who provide airport security no longer provide security. want to go down I didn't want to get off, so I closed the trips. It's closed indefinitely, I don't know when it will reopen."

A resident of Myitkyina also told RFA that due to the closure of the airport, it is difficult to prepare for important travel.

"I have information that I will go to Yangon today, Now that the plane is closed, I can't go. The airport is no longer guaranteed security because of the shock missiles. Since the fighting is going on, can't they close the public's trip and use it for their military planes? Some are saying that."

Residents said that Van Maw Airport was closed indefinitely since March 7 because it was shot with heavy weapons.

On March 7, when the fighting started, the KIA also attacked the Nanpaung airbase in Myitkyina, according to local residents.

Myitkyina - Colonel Nawbu said today that the Kachin Liberation Army (KIA) and joint forces are attacking military council camps near Van Maw Road and Laiza, and have captured 16 camps in three days.

RFA reached out to the military council's spokesperson for Kachin State, Minister of Social Affairs U Moe Min Thein, by phone to find out more about this situation, but his phone was turned off.
