Schulz said: "One of the steps that will be taken in this direction will be a long-term ceasefire, preferably during the month of Ramadan. This ceasefire would allow more humanitarian aid to reach Gaza."

Schulz congratulated all Muslims on the occasion of the month of Ramadan, and said: “The month of Ramadan begins, and it is a special time for Muslims to isolate themselves and meditate.”

He continued: "Every evening, families gather for iftar, and many of them open their homes to guests and invite friends and acquaintances. I think this is a beautiful gesture of peaceful coexistence and solidarity, and I always feel special when I have the opportunity to attend one of these iftar meals."

Schulz pointed out that Ramadan is also a period when thinking about those who are exposed to war and violence, and stressed that his feelings are with Muslims, especially in the Middle East.

Noting that many people have friends and family in the Middle East who are worried about them, Schulz said: “You are not alone in your grief. Many people in Germany are deeply concerned and share their pain about the fate of the dead and wounded and the suffering of innocent people in Gaza.”

The German Chancellor stressed that Israel must adhere to the rules of international law and not harm civilians.

Regarding Muslims in Germany concerned about integration at the beginning of Ramadan, Schulz said: “After news of racist deportation plans from right-wing extremists, I continue to hear anxious questions about the future. This is a frustrating situation. I think our answer to this should be very clear ( “As a state, we will not allow division.”

He pointed out that all citizens, whether of immigrant origins or not, belong to Germany, stressing that Muslims belong to Germany, just like Jews and Christians, as well as those belonging to other religions and worldviews.
