A surprising herbal tea can reduce anxiety and stress and relieve symptoms within a few days, says a health expert.
Dr. Eric Berg, a nutritionist and intermittent fasting specialist who addresses various medical issues through his social media accounts, recommends drinking lemon balm tea, also known as Melissa officinalis, which belongs to the mint family and its leaves give off a pleasant lemon scent. It is commonly used for medicinal purposes and as a spice in various dishes.
Lemon balm contains compounds that may provide people with a calming and relaxing sensation. It may also prevent the growth and spread of some viruses and bacteria, according to research.
Explaining the benefits of lemon balm tea for mental health, Berg says: “If you suffer from anxiety and stress, drink one cup of this tea every day. It provides wonderful benefits for what is called GABA, which is a calming molecule in the brain that makes you feel calm and peaceful.”
"When you drink this tea, your cortisol levels will drop back to normal, so you'll feel really good. You'll be able to sleep well and you'll have more energy," he added.
In 2014, a study looked at how foods containing lemon balm affected mood and cognitive function. Lemon balm was added to beverages and yogurt with natural or artificial sweeteners.
It has been shown to significantly reduce stress and anxiety.
Although research on the benefits of lemon balm tea appears promising, more studies are needed to determine its effectiveness.
You should also be aware of the potential side effects of lemon balm, including stomach pain from taking lemon balm with food. Lemon balm is best used for short periods of time, and is not recommended for use for more than 4 months without taking a break.
