57 of the 212 Democrats in the House of Representatives signed a letter calling on the administration to take every possible measure to dissuade the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from launching a comprehensive attack on the city near the Egyptian border.

“We urge you to activate existing laws and policy to immediately withhold certain offensive military aid to the Israeli government, including aid contained in already approved legislation, to prevent a large-scale attack on Rafah,” the letter published on Wednesday said.

The Biden administration's broad support for Netanyahu raises concerns within the Democratic Party, at a time when Biden is preparing for a difficult electoral competition against his Republican predecessor, Donald Trump.

On Wednesday, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken held a two-and-a-half-hour meeting in Jerusalem with Netanyahu, after which Israel reiterated its position that the Rafah operation would go ahead despite the American position and the United Nations’ warning that it would lead to a “tragedy.”

The Israeli war on Gaza since October 7 has left more than 112,000 martyrs and wounded, most of them children and women, and about 10,000 missing amid famine and comprehensive destruction, according to Palestinian and UN data.

Israel continues this war despite the issuance of a resolution by the UN Security Council to stop the fighting immediately, and also despite the International Court of Justice demanding immediate measures to prevent acts of genocide and improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
