“Prison for just minutes.” A strange concept that could revolutionize the criminal justice system

A scientist has revealed a new concept for the "prison of the future", which he claims will speed up the process of releasing a criminal to minutes, instead of years or decades.

The system, called Cogniify, implants artificial memories of a person's crime in their brain, but shows the victim's point of view.

It could contain a virtual reality-like device, showing footage of the crime generated by artificial intelligence, with a "brain implant" that stimulates emotional states such as remorse, feelings that some individuals may not produce on their own.

It is claimed that this concept, developed by Hashim Al-Ghaili (a Yemeni scholar), may ensure the long-term effects of a therapy session by making memories permanent.

Prison has long been said to deter criminals from committing future crimes, but more than 100 studies in 2021 found that it does not prevent criminals from committing crimes again.

From this standpoint, Al-Ghaili looks towards the future with a prison that “claims to help criminals learn from their past.”

A narrative video said: “Cognify could one day create and implant artificial memories directly into a prisoner’s brain. These complex, vivid, and vibrant memories are created in real-time using AI-based content. While rehabilitation may last for several minutes, "It may seem like years to a criminal."

In the experiment, prisoners undergo high-resolution brain scans that create a detailed map of their neural pathways.

The map allows the Cogniify device to target specific areas of the brain responsible for memory and logical thinking. These are dedicated tasks in the hippocampus, prefrontal cortex, amygdala, parietal lobe, and anterior cingulate cortex.

The device works to show prisoners AI-generated memories of their crimes, which can include domestic violence, hate crimes, embezzlement, discrimination, theft and fraud. Technology can stimulate a physical response, by allowing the perpetrator to feel the pain and suffering his victim has endured.

The demonstration video revealed that the Cogniify concept could revolutionize the criminal justice system, by significantly reducing the need for long-term incarceration and its associated costs.
