  • Vivek Ramaswamy has left his position as co-leader of the Department of Government Efficiency and will run for Ohio governor next week.
  • The newly created DOGE will now be led solely by Elon Musk.

Ramaswamy, the former presidential candidate and entrepreneur, resigned from his position as a DOGE leader this week as he announced his intention to run for the Ohio governor’s post. The departure marks a significant shift in the leadership structure of the newly created federal spending watchdog group.

Ramaswamy announced his departure through an X post on January 20. He expressed gratitude for his involvement in DOGE’s creation while voicing confidence in Elon Musk’s continued leadership. Sources familiar with the situation suggest that Ramaswamy will launch his bid for the gubernatorial candidacy of Ohio the following week. Given the structural expectations put in place at DOGE, his position at the company is no longer sustainable.

Ramaswamy Leadership Transition and Political Ambitions

The shift comes as mounting signs of friction within Trump’s team emerge. Politico has further suggested that in the recent past, Musk had wanted Ramaswamy out of the organization. One senior Republican figure allied to Trump’s team commented that the Indian-origin businessman had alienated far too many people within Mar-a-Lago and Washington, D.C.

DOGE, named after Musk’s favored currency, Dogecoin, threatens legal troubles hours after its creation via an executive order. Public Citizen and several other nonprofit organizations have sued the advisory organization for violating the Federal Advisory Committee Act. The legal actions put into question the ability of private citizens to make government decisions without enough checks, balances, and accountability mechanisms in place.

The organization was created in December when Ramaswamy made insensitive comments about the American workplace and how tech companies hire people. He said some incidents about foreign workers and the “worship of average performances over merit” created further controversies during his short time in the office.

Challenges and Controversies

Trump transition spokesperson Anna Kelly acknowledged Ramaswamy’s contributions in a statement, noting that his decision to pursue elected office necessitated his departure from DOGE. “We thank him immensely for his contributions over the last 2 months and expect him to play a vital role in making America great again,” Kelly stated.

The Department of Government Efficiency was created by executive order on Trump’s first day in office. Its main objective was to implement deeper budgetary cuts and reduce federal employees. After Ramaswamy’s exit, Musk will become the sole leader of the organization, dealing with legal cases and advancing its mandate on governmental changes.

Ramaswamy has shown some shift in his political agenda as he shifted camp from the DOGE leadership to the gubernatorial candidate. Although he might have left the federal spending watchdog group early, his support for Trump and possible political career in Ohio will remain influential within the Republican Party during its formative years. These developments coincide with broader discussions about government efficiency, private sector involvement in public administration, and the evolving landscape of Republican politics.
