Remains of a mammoth elephant were found in a tourist area in Kyrgyzstan

Remains of a mammoth elephant were found in the Jirjalan River Valley in the Issyk-Kul tourist area, in southern Kyrgyzstan.

A source in the Kyrgyz Ministry of Culture stated: “A mammoth elephant tusk and fragments of the lower part of the skull were found.”

The ministry said: “The fossils have been located and are located approximately 150 meters apart from each other and at a depth of 3-5 metres.” She added that the owner of the site, which is being developed near the Jirjalan River, informed the authorities of the discovery, and a group of archaeologists was sent to the archaeological site immediately. The bone fragments were preserved in place. After taking special measures to fully preserve the fossils, they will be transferred to the museum.

This is not the first time that mammoth remains have been found in the Issyk-Kul tourist area. Before that, mammoth elephant fossils had been found there several times, including under the waters of Lake Issyk-Kul. Kyrgyz scientists first announced such a discovery in 1977.
