What’s good? The traditional Japanese atmosphere and the incredible food are what make this place so special. We ordered yakitori (caramelized skewered chicken) and gyoza (pan-fried dumplings) as starters, and two main plates to share: the sashimi moriawase and the yakiniku — a plate of grilled beef. We then concluded the meal with some green tea mochi ice cream and a cup of warm Japanese tea. Everything was delicious.

What’s not? The place has a controversial reputation in Brussels: It is known not only for its amazing and fresh sushi, but also for limited availability, high prices and sometimes rude staff. We thankfully didn’t experience any of those rumored downsides. Note: The tables are small and close to each other and the venue is buzzy, so it might not be ideal if you are looking to enjoy a Zen meal.

Vibe: The atmosphere is special. Upon entering the small door and opening the green curtains, you immediately see the chefs dressed in traditional Japanese outfits chopping raw fish behind the sushi counter, and waiters running around the room with sushi platters or steamy ramen bowls.

Who’s picking up the check? The lunch menu is a good deal: It includes a small starter, main course and Japanese tea for €17. Prices increase at dinnertime, with main dishes such as sushi platters, tempura or grilled meat ranging from €30 to €40. Desserts cost around €10.

Insider tip: Reserve, reserve, reserve! And if you want to try their special chirashi dish — a bowl of vinegar rice with sashimi on top — make sure you reserve that in advance too. Whew!

Spotted: Not necessarily an EU bubble spot. Here, you’ll dine among Brussels locals, tourists and plenty of Japanese customers. If you end up staying until the end of the evening shift, you may also see the main chef enjoying a well-deserved beer at the sushi counter.

How to get there: Pretty easy. Located on Chaussée d’Ixelles, just next to Place Fernand Coq. It’s an ideal location if you want to get dinner before a stroll down to Flagey for a night out.
