A specialist doctor revealed a “hidden reason” that may be behind suffering from headaches early in the morning upon waking up.
Dr. Michelle, who is famous on TikTok with her account @livingwellwithdrmichelle, said: “What could a headache mean when you wake up in the morning? Well, more often than not, it means that you have difficulty getting enough air at night to breathe properly once you sleep.” ".
She explained: “When you are awake, all the muscles in the neck area open the airways or the tube through which we breathe. But when you go to sleep, especially deep sleep, those muscles relax. The tongue and the tissues in the back of the throat return to the airway, "If the airway is really small, or blocked by tissue or something, the tongue will block the airway."
Michelle added: “Your body will do everything it can to open the airway again. So, first of all, you will come out of deep sleep because you need to engage a muscle. You will move the lower jaw forward and press your teeth to flatten the tongue, which will open the airway.” More air, but this process tires the muscles, so you wake up with pain in your jaw and muscles, and you suffer from a headache in the morning because you are trying to breathe at night.”
She then urged people who constantly wake up with headaches to consult their GP so they can check what is "happening during sleep".
