AP reports that more than 800,000 people have been evacuated as a powerful cyclone is about to hit Bangladesh.
On Sunday, May 26, a storm may enter at midnight. The National Weather Service said gusts of up to 85 miles per hour could hit.
The storm will also hit the Coxsack Bazar district where the Rohingya refugees who fled from Myanmar live. According to the news, the airlines traveling to Kossem Bazar have also been stopped.
The current Rohingya refugees are worried about the impact of the coming storm. A Rohingya told RFA that aid groups have moved people from landslides in the camp.
"They are living in fear in the refugee camp. Now we have been warned until Signal 9. The houses in the refugee camp are made of bamboo, so they are not strong. If there is a strong wind, the roofs can be blown off, and if it rains heavily, it will flood. There are also huts in low-lying areas. Then the land collapses and people die every year, so they are worried about this," said a refugee.
Bangladeshi authorities said they have opened 4,000 relief camps to protect against the storm.
There are currently more than 36,000 Rohingya refugees sheltering in Basancha Island, a low-lying area of Bangladesh. 57 shelters have been built for those people, UN refugee chief Mohammad Rafiqul Haque told AFP news agency.
