VLADIMIR Putin is ready to launch a nuclear war if he feels the West is threatening Russia’s statehood, sovereignty, or independence.

The Russian tyrant, 71, declared weapons “exist in order to use them” in a chilling threat issued ahead of this week’s presidential election.

The despot is all but certain to win another six-year term in the presidential vote and stay in the Kremlin – until he dies or is ousted.

In an interview with Russian state television released this morning, Putin emphasised that Moscow is “ready” from “a military-technical point of view” in the event of a perceived threat to national security.

He declared: “Weapons exist in order to use them.”

“We have our own principles.

“We are ready to use weapons, including any weapons, including [nuclear], if we are talking about the existence of the Russian state, harming our sovereignty and independence.”

He said Russia’s nuclear troops are “constantly, constantly on standby”.

The deployment of US troops in Russia or Ukraine would be viewed as American intervention in the war, he said, and trigger a reaction from Russia’s nuclear forces.

Putin added: “(In the United States) there are enough specialists in the field of Russian-American relations and in the field of strategic restraint.

“Therefore, I don’t think that here everything is rushing to it [nuclear confrontation], but we are ready for this.”

Russia has threatened the use of nuclear forces since it invaded Ukraine in February 2022, the most recent instance of which came last month in Putin’s annual state-of-the-nation address.

The deranged despot ranted for more than two hours at Russian elites and warned the West that its deepening involvement in the ongoing conflict risked a nuclear war.

He accused the West of trying to “destroy” Russia and “drag us into an arms race“.

Putin said Nato forces were “preparing to strike out territory” but the consequences for “potential invaders” would be “much more tragic”.

He brandished the threat of his nuclear rocket Sarmat – known as Satan-2 – and warned that the West was in “danger of nuclear conflict” if they sent troops to Ukraine.

Just 24 hours after Putin’s fiery nuke threat, Kremlin commanders announced the test firing of a Yars ballistic missile – which can carry nuclear warheads.

Video released by Russian state media showed the 50,000kg, 75ft weapon being fired from a mobile missile launcher.

Leaked Russian military files suggest he is closer now than ever to unleashing a nuclear strike.

Putin claimed last year that Russia’s nuke doctrine outlined two possible reasons for using nuclear weapons: if an enemy first launched a nuclear strike, or if “the very existence of Russia as a state comes under threat even if conventional weapons are used”.

Alexander Gabuev, director of the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center in Berlin, said the tyrant’s threshold is “pretty low”.

He told the Financial Times: “They [the files] show that the operational threshold for using nuclear weapons is pretty low if the desired result can’t be achieved through conventional means.”

Last month, a close ally of Putin’s and former Russian president, Dmitry Medvedev, said the Kremlin was prepared to unleash its “entire arsenal” of weapons – including nuclear missiles – at the UK, the US, Germany, and Ukraine if it was defeated in the bloody war.

The Putin crony said: “Attempts to return Russia to the borders of 1991 will lead to only one thing.

“Towards a global war with Western countries using the entire strategic arsenal of our state.

“In Kyiv, Berlin, London, Washington.”

Putin's nuclear threats

BELOW is a timeline of some of the thinly veiled, and more cutthroat threats Vladimir Putin has made against the West with his nuclear arsenal since invading Ukraine two years ago.

FEBRUARY 24, 2022 – Vladimir Putin: “No matter who tries to stand in our way or all the more so create threats for our country and our people, they must know that Russia will respond immediately, and the consequences will be such as you have never seen in your entire history.”

MARCH 26, 2022 – Putin crony Dmitry Medvedev: “We have a special document on nuclear deterrence. This document clearly indicates the grounds on which the Russian Federation is entitled to use nuclear weapons. … [This includes] when an act of aggression is committed against Russia and its allies.”

APRIL 20, 2022 – Vladimir Putin: “[The new Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying nuclear warheads] will force all who are trying to threaten our country in the heat of frenzied, aggressive rhetoric to think twice.”

FEBRUARY 18, 2024: Putin crony Dmitry Medvedev: “Attempts to return Russia to the borders of 1991 will lead to only one thing. Towards a global war with Western countries using the entire strategic arsenal of our state.”

FEBRUARY 29, 2024 – Vladimir Putin: “They must understand that we also have weapons that can hit targets on their territory… All this really threatens a conflict with the use of nuclear weapons and the destruction of civilization. Don’t they get that?”

MARCH 13, 2024 – Vladimir Putin: “From a military-technical point of view, we are, of course, ready. … Weapons exist in order to use them. We have our own principles.”

Expert Dr Stephen Hall, from the Henry Jackson Society, warned that Putin’s reelection would spark “an escalation in the aggression against Ukraine and the West”.

He told The Sun: “There is a possibility that he would use a small nuclear weapon that would take out a block out of Kyiv or Kharkiv.

“For Putin, this is existential. He won’t settle for a frozen conflict, there is going to be Russian antipathy towards Ukraine as long as Putin remains in power.”

The dictator said today in his interview with Rossiya-1 television that the door was open for talks, but Russia would hold onto its gains and seek firm guarantees of security for his country from the West.

Russian authorities reported another major attack by Ukrainian drones early this morning, as Ukraine reported more Russian attacks.

The Kremlin’s Defence Ministry said its air defences downed 58 drones over six regions – including one which hit an oil refinery in the Ryazan region in western Russia, sparking a fire and injuring at least two people.

Meanwhile, a Russian strike killed two people and injured another five in the eastern region of occupied Donetsk, in Ukraine, according to Gov Vadym Filashkin.

Putin’s terrified troops appeared on video to be running for their lives after Russian insurgents reportedly captured a village.

The Ukraine-supporting rebels stormed across the border into Russia yesterday in an unprecedented two-pronged assault, vowing to “march on Moscow”.

Fighters from the Freedom of Russia Legion, Siberian Battalion, and Russian Volunteer Corps are believed to be jointly battling government troops in the Russian regions of Belgorod and Kursk.

The Russian tyrant claimed today a recent spike in Ukrainian drone attacks deep inside Russia were intended to derail the country’s presidential election – being held between Friday and Sunday.
