Russia is preparing a significant response to the latest sanctions imposed by the United States, aiming to counteract the actions taken against its state-funded media outlets. This comes as tensions escalate between the two nations, with Russia asserting that its retaliatory measures will be severe.
In a move to regain control over the situation, Russia, under the leadership of President Vladimir Putin, has recently initiated trials for using cryptocurrency in cross-border payments. This is seen as a step towards minimizing the impact of sanctions imposed by Ukraine’s Western allies, including the United States.
Harsh measures in response to media sanctions
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned the United States for sanctioning key figures within its state-funded media network, RT. The sanctions target RT’s editor-in-chief, Margarita Simonyan, and her deputy, Elizaveta Brodskaia. Russia views these actions as part of Washington’s “information campaign,” particularly in the lead-up to the US presidential elections scheduled for November.
Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has criticized the US government’s approach, describing it as a decline of “liberal democracies.” In a statement released today, Zakharova emphasized that Russia’s response would be formidable and designed to make “everyone shudder.” She hinted at the possibility of symmetrical and asymmetrical retaliatory measures, depending on how the situation evolves.
Additional indictments by the US
On Wednesday, the United States further escalated the situation by indicting two additional RT employees, Kostiantyn Kalashnikov and Elena Afanasyeva. They are accused of attempting to influence the upcoming US elections by funneling $10 million to a Tennessee-based corporation. This corporation allegedly used social media platforms to disseminate content containing hidden messaging aligned with Russian government interests.
Zakharova responded to these indictments by reiterating that Washington’s actions are part of a broader strategy to influence the final stages of the US electoral process. She reaffirmed that Russia’s forthcoming measures would be decisive and impactful.
US government expands sanctions on Russian media
In a related development, the US Department of State has announced additional sanctions targeting employees of Russian state-owned media outlets. These individuals have been designated as part of “foreign missions,” which requires them to register with the US government and disclose information about their properties and personnel in the country.
The Department of State also plans to expand its list of foreign missions to include several other Russian media companies, including Rossiya Segodnya and its subsidiaries, such as RIA Novosti, RT, TV-Novosti, Ruptly, and Sputnik. This expansion is part of a broader effort by Washington to counteract what it perceives as foreign interference in its electoral process.
As the situation unfolds, the world watches closely, anticipating Russia’s measures in response to the latest US sanctions. The ongoing tension between the two nations underscores the high stakes, particularly in the upcoming US elections.
