J.D. Vance earned mockery this week from a former Republican lawmaker as the vice president tried to salvage the second lady's cultural trip to Greenland by refashioning it as a national security visit.

President Donald Trump has pressed the idea of the United States acquiring Greenland, a territory of Denmark that has ambitions to be its own independent state.

"American representatives were seen walking around the city, canvassing residents to see if people would be interested in a visit from the vice president’s wife," wrote The New Republic on Wednesday.

“They’ve gotten no, no, no, no, no, every single time,” reported TV 2 correspondent Jesper Steinmetz.

Alicia Menendez, standing in for MSNBC's Nicolle Wallace, asked foreign correspondent Molly Hunter to detail "how this trip came together and fell apart."

"We have met no one in the 18 hours that we've been on the ground who has been enthusiastic about this trip," Hunter reported of the locals on the large island.

She said the trip was scaled back from a cultural adventure to a national security trip, visiting only U.S. military personnel.

The disaster was comical to former Florida Rep. David Jolly, an ex-Republican.

"Maybe they should send Julia Louis-Dreyfus and play a little 'Veep' soundtrack for this trip," cracked Jolly, "because that's what this is shaping up to be. I mean, coming off the heels of the family ski vacation having to get canceled, there's nothing more humiliating than to have an official state visit of sorts and have, you know, the foreign nation say, 'We don't want you here.' I mean, why are you even here?"

He called it part of Trump's new "imperialistic agenda," which appears to be seeking to acquire new land and territory.
