The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) said in a report that India has a larger nuclear arsenal than Pakistan.
The institute's report says that in January 2024, India had 172 nuclear warheads and Pakistan had 170 nuclear warheads.
The report explained that China increased its arsenals from 410 nuclear warheads in January 2023 to 500 in January 2024, and this increase is expected to continue.
According to the report, India, Pakistan and North Korea are striving to create the possibility of installing nuclear warheads on ballistic missiles, noting that such technologies exist only in Russia, France, Britain, the United States and China.
The report continued: “While Pakistan remains the focus of India’s nuclear deterrence programme, India appears to be paying increasing attention to long-range weapons.”
In a previous report, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute stated that it had monitored an increase in the number of nuclear warheads in combat readiness around the world.
According to the report, out of the 12,121 nuclear warheads in the world as of January 2024, about 9,585 were in a state of combat readiness. About 3,904 of them were deployed on missiles or aircraft, which is 60 more nuclear warheads than was the case in January 2023.
