Tens of thousands of supporters of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) defied fears of arrest to protest in Dhaka. The BNP demands Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation and a neutral government for the Jan. 7 poll, which the party has boycotted. BNP leaders in hiding joined the rally, denouncing the government's handling of the election. The government denies targeting opposition leaders and supporters, but rights groups and Western countries are pressuring for free and fair elections.
