Andrey Dorokhov, associate professor of the Department of Inorganic Chemistry at the Russian University of Technology, said that regular use of air fresheners causes serious diseases.
“Fragrances contain volatile organic compounds that can pollute indoor air. Inhaling them can cause respiratory irritation, headaches, and allergies, and can also cause more serious diseases, such as asthma and chronic respiratory diseases,” he says.
According to him, the components of these fragrances exacerbate asthma and allergy symptoms in people with hypersensitivity, as they often contain allergens.
“Some of their components, such as phthalates, can negatively affect the hormonal system. They also destroy the endocrine glands and affect hormonal balance, which is dangerous for the reproductive system and the general condition of the body,” he says.
The expert points out that when used incorrectly, fragrances can cause poisoning, especially among children and pets.
“Inhaling them in large quantities can cause serious poisoning that requires medical attention,” he says. “In addition, they contain flammable substances that can cause a fire if used near an open fire or heat sources.”
To reduce the risks of using air fresheners, the expert recommends choosing alternative methods of air freshening - regularly ventilating the place, using natural fragrances, such as essential oils, and maintaining cleanliness inside the house.
He says: “You can use indoor plants that naturally purify the air. In addition, you can use dry mixtures of herbs and spices that do not contain harmful chemical compounds and are safe for health. By choosing such alternatives, you can significantly reduce the negative impact on the environment and improve indoor air quality.”
