The trailer for Netflix’s ‘The Greatest Night in Pop’ explores behind the scenes of creating 1985’s ‘We Are the World’.
Putting Soundcloud rappers & TikTok stars together does not have the same impact as what Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, and Lionel Richie created in 1985 with “We Are the World,” one of the best pop-cultural records ever put into the wild.
Raising funds for the USA for Africa, the three assembled an eclectic group of music’s biggest talents, regardless of genre, and asked everyone to sing together for a greater cause. And now, it’s the subject of a massive documentary, The Greatest Night in Pop, which Netflix released a trailer recently.

In 1985, a group of artists achieved a great deal. That’s when 46 singers and songwriters banded together to produce and record the chart-topping song “We Are The World,” which has since become an iconic anthem that transcends decades.
The Netflix documentary The Greatest Night in Pop will reveal all the details behind the song’s creation.
As one would imagine, the film will follow the creation of the popular song from beginning to end, as well as the nightmare of synchronizing the schedules of numerous musicians. However, it’s clear to see why everyone was willing to participate.
Not only would they have the opportunity to work with some of the most accomplished artists in the music industry, but it would also be for a worthy cause: African famine relief.
The documentary features never-before-seen footage, conversations with the musicians, and new details about the legendary song released decades ago.
Richie says in the trailer that the concept for “We Are the World” did not come from him or Jackson but from Harry Belafonte, who called him to ask if he might write a song to raise funds for hunger relief in Africa.
The profits from the single would benefit United Support of Artists for Africa (USA for Africa), an organization focused on providing food and relief help to starving people in Africa, particularly Ethiopia, which was going through a famine at the time.
Produced by Quincy Jones & Michael Omartian, “We Are the World” raised more than $63 million for the project, which is more than $160 million when adjusted for inflation. The song received four Grammy Awards and one American Music Award.
