The incident of mixed oil caused panic buying among the public, and the domestic oil press machine was hot selling

The "toxic oil" incident in China has caused people to worry about the safety of cooking oil and created a panic. People lined up in Zhengzhou supermarkets to buy self-operated cooking oil. On e-commerce platforms, household oil presses suddenly became popular, and people "refined oil" themselves to ensure safety. Some residents said that in the past ten years, they found that the oil dripping from the range hoods was a paste-like solidified block, which was different from the past.

Recently, the "mixed loading" incident of Chinese industry and food in tank trucks was exposed by the media, causing panic among people everywhere. People rushed to buy self-operated oil and imported oil. On July 10, videos posted by many Henan netizens showed that many customers rushed to Henan Pangdonglai Supermarket to buy. A Pangdonglai purchasing agent said that Pangdonglai's peanut oil was out of stock. Pangdonglai Xuchang Times Square store supermarket customer service said: Peanut oil is sold out, sunflower oil is only enough for sale for a few hours, and it is expected to be out of stock for a week. As seen in the video, many customers lined up in front of Pangdonglai, waiting to buy self-operated cooking oil.

A video shooter said: "People are queuing up at Pang Donglai to buy Pang Donglai's 'pressed cooking oil'. The goods have arrived. This is Pang Donglai's 'pressed peanut oil', and this is Pang Donglai's 'sunflower seed oil'."

Zhengzhou resident Liu Li told this station on Friday (12th) that after the "toxic oil" incident, many people suddenly realized that cooking oil, like other foods, carries the risk of causing disease. She said: "The oil left on the stove is like plastic now, which was not the case before. In the old house, there was no range hood, and the oil dripped down in the form of oil, but not now. Now it is all paste and gel. This is why there are more and more hospitals and pharmacies now. The oil made by small workshops is actually very hygienic and environmentally friendly."

People consider their personal health and buy oil presses to "refine oil" themselves

Some people also buy household oil presses to make their own cooking oil. E-commerce platforms show that in the past 24 hours, more than 100 people have placed orders for various oil presses that cost more than 700 yuan each. According to the Times Finance website, many consumers have posted about the safety of cooking oil on social platforms, some of whom choose to buy imported cooking oil, and some consumers have started to refine their own oil. On the Xiaohongshu platform, there are more than 1,600 notes about household oil presses.

Dongguan resident Ms. Mai said in an interview with our station that toxic cooking oil has endless consequences. She said she is particularly worried about the health of the elderly: "Of course I am worried, who isn't! There are many elderly people here. I saw on the news that many people are talking about it. They say that when cooking with oil, if it catches fire after heating, it means there is kerosene."

The customer service of a flagship store of imported oil on Taobao revealed to Times Finance that the store's sales have skyrocketed since the mixed oil incident, "especially in the past two days. Almost a month's worth of goods were sold out in a few days. Now the store doesn't have much stock left."

Edible oil involved in "mixed oil tanks" is neglected

At present, the products of Huifu and Jinding, the edible oil brand under Sinograin, which were involved in the "mixed oil tank" incident, can no longer be found on platforms such as JD.com and Taobao. According to multiple media reports, on July 8, all edible oil products including sunflower oil and corn germ oil were removed from Jinding's Taobao flagship store, and as of July 10, the flagship store no longer had any products on sale.

Guo Li, the father of a child who was poisoned by the tainted milk powder incident, said in an interview with our station: "Similar food safety incidents are endless and continue despite repeated bans. The reason is that the Food Safety Law and other relevant laws and regulations are not strictly enforced. This is just like the melamine-tainted milk powder incident, which will continue forever."

In China's edible oil market, state-owned enterprises dominate the market. Yihai Kerry's brand Golden Dragon Fish, COFCO Group's Fortune and Shandong Luhua have a combined market share of more than 60% in 2022. Recently, the Beijing News exposed that some tankers were directly loaded with edible oil without cleaning after loading industrial oil, which caused public condemnation.
