Israeli President Isaac Herzog participates on Sunday in the opening of the National Museum of the Jewish Holocaust in the Dutch capital, Amsterdam, amid protests demanding an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
The museum issued a statement to the media in which it said that it had invited Herzog before the October 7 attack and the subsequent Israeli military campaign on the Gaza Strip.
The statement said that museum officials acknowledge that Herzog's presence raises many questions, yet the statement claimed that the Israeli president represents the homeland for many Dutch survivors who "survived the Holocaust" and immigrated to Israel.
The Dutch anti-Zionist Jewish organization said: “We express our deep concern about the upcoming opening of the Dutch National Holocaust Museum, which the Israeli president is scheduled to attend.”
The organization decided to organize a protest with the Dutch Palestinian community and the Socialist International, adding, "While it commemorates the victims of the Holocaust, it cannot stand idly by while the war in Gaza continues."
The human rights organization Amnesty International placed banners around the museum calling for Herzog to be brought before the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
This opening coincides with a series of pro-Palestine protests in the capital, Amsterdam, where protesters chant slogans demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza in a square near the museum, carrying Palestinian flags and banners that read, some of which read “Jews against genocide” and on others, “The grandson of someone.” Holocaust survivors say: Stop the Gaza Holocaust.
The Ministry of Health in Gaza announced on Sunday that Israeli forces had committed 8 massacres during the past 24 hours, noting that the total death toll in the Strip had reached 31,045 since October 7.
The war in Gaza entered its 156th day due to the continued Israeli bombing despite the unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe. It seems that the new deal has not yet matured despite the mediators’ efforts to complete it before the month of Ramadan.
