The other D-Day: France commemorates World War II Allied landings in Provence

France is commemorating the 80th anniversary of the 1944 Allied landings in Provence on Thursday, which though overshadowed by the Normandy landings were one of France's most important contributions to World War II. Six African leaders will take part in the official events, and President Emmanuel Macron is expected to highlight the contributions made by the soldiers recruited – often forcibly – in French overseas colonies.
