The safe amount of caffeine per day

Dr. Alexander Yemelyanov, a cardiologist at the National Medical Research Center for Treatment and Preventive Medicine, indicates that a safe daily dose of caffeine is equivalent to three cups of coffee.

According to him, caffeine is present in energy drinks as well. In addition, one can of energy drinks contains an amount of sugar that exceeds the permissible limit per day.

He points out that the stimulant effect of energy drinks is linked to their containing a large amount of caffeine and sugar. Caffeine has properties that stimulate the nervous system, accelerate the pulse, and constrict blood vessels, but its effect wears off after 3-6 hours, and is replaced by fatigue and decreased ability to work.

He says: "The safe dose of caffeine for an adult is 400 mg per day, which is equivalent to three cups of coffee. A regular can of energy drinks contains about 150-160 mg of caffeine."

According to him, taking an overdose of caffeine leads to headaches, anxiety, insomnia, rapid heartbeat, nervousness, and high blood pressure, and may lead to death, according to many medical publications.

The doctor points out that the amount of sugar contained in energy drinks exceeds the permissible limit per day (25-30 grams of sugar), which gives great energy, but for a short period. Consequences of excessive sugar consumption include diabetes, insulin resistance, obesity, and cardiovascular disease.
